10 December 1861


Tuesday, 10th Rainy. To day I sat on the Court Martial again. Tried three men to day. At night attended a candy pulling. Anderson Fike and W. Slade came to night. I escorted Miss Hendon to the party.

Brigade Order No. 20, Head Quarters Brig. US Forces, Paducah, Ky., Dec. 10th, 1861
Private Frederick Wiggand Co. 'F', 9th Regiment Ills. Vols. Is hereby relieved from duty at these Head Quarters and will report himself to the Comdg. Officer of said Company for duty.
By order of Brig Genl E. A. Paine

Fred Wiggand was detailed as a servant for the regiment's former Colonel, Brigadier-General Paine.

9 December 1861


Monday, 9th Pleasant. This morning the court assembled. The members are Col. Smith, Lieut. Col. Antheny, Lieut. Col. Phillips, Capt. Lew, Capt. Connel, Capt. Brown, Capt. Wallace, Capt - ------Capt. Webb, Judge Advocate L. C. McWillard. To day we organized and tried private Scheiffer of Capt. Teilman's cavalry, Lieut. Potter of the 23 Ind., private Howard of co. C, 2d regular cav., private Wetson, co. F, 4th regular cav. In the eve I was at Lieut. Britt's residence and became acquainted with Col. Hendon's daughter.

8 December 1861


Sunday, 8th Pleasant. E.I.R.B. Peter 12 1st John 1-2-3. This morning we had regimental inspection, also co. inspection. Lieut. Britt's wife and Miss Little called at my tent. In the eve I called to see Col. Phillips who is unwell. At dress parade I was detailed to sit on a gen. court marshal.

December, Saturday, 7th 1861 Pleasant. Took a lesson in the sword exercise this morn. Attended a little at the stopping place of Lieut. W. Britt. Had a nice time. No news of importance.

Friday, 6th Pleasant. E.I.R.B. Neh. 11 2d Peter 1-2-3. This morning I am detailed as officer of the day. Took another lesson in the sword practice. Engaged in reading in the History of England.

Commanders of the Cos will parade their resp. commands dressed in the grey uniform promptly at the beat of the drum (1 ¼ o'clock PM) on the Regtal Parade ground prepared for marching to the Review Ground.

5 December 1861

Thursday, 5th Pleasant. E.I.R.B. 1st Peter 3-4-5. This morning we had battalion drill and passed in review before the Hon. Jessie K. Dubois, Aud. of Ills. In the eve took a lesson in-the sword exercise. At dress parade the order for Sergt. F. C. Scheel to report himself for the duties of a Lieut. was read. He gave the non com., and the comd., an oyster supper. Very nice. Bought a paper to night with the president's message in it.

Second Lieut. W. Bohlen is herewith transferred from Co. D to Co. A.  2nd Lieut F. E. Scheel whose commission having arrived is assigned to Co. D for duty and has to report himself in person at this Head Quarters.
