3 June 1861
Monday, 3d This morn being some better in health, I was appointed Capt. of the Police. At about 8 o'clock this morn a man of co. A was shot while in a skiff. Learned that S. A. Douglas was dead. To day I talked with several persons from the south. Heard the trial of A. M. Pully who was taken as a secessionist, proved guilty and put to wheeling dirt. He is a member of our legislature from Williamson co.
The man who was shot was Peter Geisel. The secessionist legislator is actually James D. Pulley, a Democrat representing Johnson County, Illinois. He was arrested on a charge of enlisting men for the southern Army, but not indicted; later served as Lt. Col. of the 128th Reg't Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
