Thursday, 10th Pleasant. E.I.R.B. II Cron.
7th II Corth. 4th. Last night the vidette guard of 5 men of the cavalry, co. I,
was attacked by a large force of cavalry and all but 2 wounded or taken
prisoners. Took all the horses. When the firing took place at 1 o'clock A.M. at
night, our boys got up, dressed and prepared to rally into line, but was not
called out. Upon returning to our beds, Corp. Heinberger discovered that Carl
Hess, a young man who had been unwell for some time, was dead. We got the
surgeon, but he could do no good. We procured a coffin and had him buried at 2
P.M.
