1 May 1861

May, Wednesday, 1st 1861 Some clouds: chilly. At noon, received marching orders, and at 4 P.M., proceeded to the railroad depot: at 7 P.M. took the cars for Cairo. The trains were heavy and moved slowly. Darkness soon closed in and the ride was not very interesting. Excepting the prospect of having a fight at Cairo soon, all was dull. At day-light we were in the forests of S. Ills. and nothing occurred of importance till we arrived there.
