22 October 1861

Tuesday, 22d Pleasant. E.I.R.B. II Cron. 21st Eph. 1st. This morning I was relieved as officer of the day. We had battalion drill in the afternoon. In the evening Mr. Scheel of Belleville arrived here to pay us a visit. Our scouting party returned to night with a secesh Captain.

21 October 1861

Monday, 21st Pleasant. E.I.R.B. II Cron 20th Gal. 6th. This morning I was detailed as officer of the day. Nothing of importance took place during the day. In the evening the band played and many of the Germans engaged in waltzing. I then went to the Col. quarters and spent the rest of the eve. Had a pleasant time. The Mo. 8th reg. and I co. of cavalry left here at 10 P.M. for parts to me unknown. To day a boy of co. I by the name of Robinson  was buried. Mathew Rayhill being disabled by rheumatism, I sent him home last night.

20 October 1861


Sunday, 20th Pleasant. E.I.R.B. II Cron. 18-19 Gal. 3d-4th-5th. This morning I attended the Episcopal Church and was much edified & well entertained. It was the first time that I ever attended the Episcopal Church. In the afternoon we had dress parade. We also took supper at the large table consisting of the officers of the left wing. For the first time in the eve the band played for us.

Saturday, 19th Pleasant. E.I.R.B. II Cron. 17 Gal. 2d. I attended officers' school this morning. In the afternoon we had battalion drill.

Special Order No 61, Head Quarters US Forces, Paducah, Ky, Oct 19th, 1861
The Provost Marshall will cause a list to be taken of all persons who land from the Steamers plying up & down the River specifying full name, and if not a resident of the city, their business & probable length of stay.  If Officers & Soldiers, the Company & Regt to which they belong will be set forth.  A list of all persons departing will likewise be taken.  These lists will be handed in at these Head Quarters daily with the Guard report.  The Provost Marshall will cause the immediate expulsion of all prostitutes from this city & enforce their absence.

17 October 1861

October, Thursday, 17th 1861 Rainy. Cron. 14-15 Corth. 12-13. This morning I rec. a letter from my brother Harvey stating that Luther, my youngest brother, and my brother-in-law, had enlisted; that my Mother was very low & that father is now left with only the girls with him. To day I wrote a letter for the Red Wing Republican. Had dress parade this eve. To day is the birth day of my oldest sister, Eliza. She is 28 years of age.

Oct 17th, 1861  H. C. Fike acknowledges the receipt of 40 Dollars from my schedule on township treasury.  On the same date 15 dollars by letter from (??) also from treasury on schedule.

16 October 1861

Wednesday, 16th Pleasant. E.I.R.B. II Cron. 12th II Corth. 9th & 10th. This morning I visited Gen. Paine's quarters on business. Had quite a sociable time with the Col. and Maj. In the afternoon we had battalion drill and then marched through the city. Rec. the news of the battle between Montgomery and McCulloch which took place on the 6th inst. on the Osage River in S. Mo., also the details of the other battle. This Rainy. E.I.R.B. Cron. 13 - II Corth 11th.

15 October 1861

Tuesday, 15th Pleasant. E.I.R.B. II Cron. 11th II Corth. 8th. This morning I was relieved as officer of the day. I then had my measure taken for a new suit. Had a dish of oysters. Bought 4 blue woolen shirts.

14 October 1861

Monday, 14th Pleasant. This morning I was called upon to act as officer of the day. Some more rebels were taken. Among them was the Sheriff of this, McCracken, Co. I bought a large pistol to day, one that was found at the place where the rebels captured our pickets. I paid $17.00 for it, then sold my little one for the same. In the eve. a show was held in the camp by some minstrels. To day I had quite an interview with Judge Tremble, the Union candidate for congressman last fall but was defeated by Barnatt (sic).

Head Quarters US Forces  Paducah, Ky Oct 14th, 1861
General Order No 23 } The Municipal Regulations which usually govern communities in regard to fast riding or driving through the streets will be observed here.  The Provost Guard will arrest all who offend in this particular.  Public animals when being taken to water will go and return in a walk.

Sunday, 13th Pleasant. E.I.R.B. II Cron. 10th - II Corth. 7th. To day being the sabbath, every thing was very quiet. We had preaching at 3 in the afternoon by L. F. Ferree from St. John 16 - 6. In the eve. we had dress parade.
