8 September 1861

Sunday, 8th Pleasant. This morning I found by inquiry to my astonishment that it was Sunday. I never spent a sabbath in my life that seemed so little like a sabbath day. Paducah is a pretty city and we have a beautiful camp. We captured here in the depot 350 brs. of flour, 65 sacks of coffee, bacon and sundry other articles to the amount in total of 25,000 dols. To day Gen. Smith of the regular army came here from Washington and took command. He is a good military man.

Saturday, 7th Pleasant. The people still leave the place by day and night. Last night we had the rumor that we were to be attacked. At 12 we drew up in line of battle and laid on our arms till morning. I was sent to day in ambush with 20 men for some powder, but made no discovery.

6 September 1861

Friday, 6th Pleasant. This morning we were still on the river. We landed at Paducah at 10 A.M. Went out to the depot. Rested till we had eaten dinner, then we marched out 6 miles and burned a railroad bridge, then returned. Got here at sundown. Great fear seized the people and they began to leave the place by scores. I lost one man from my co. He was caught by the rebels and beat nearly to death.
