8 September 1861

Sunday, 8th Pleasant. This morning I found by inquiry to my astonishment that it was Sunday. I never spent a sabbath in my life that seemed so little like a sabbath day. Paducah is a pretty city and we have a beautiful camp. We captured here in the depot 350 brs. of flour, 65 sacks of coffee, bacon and sundry other articles to the amount in total of 25,000 dols. To day Gen. Smith of the regular army came here from Washington and took command. He is a good military man.
