19 November 1861


Tuesday, 19th Pleasant. E.I.R.B. Ezra 1st Tim. 1-2-3. This morning I procured a coffin and at 3 P.M. we buried him, one of Capt. Teiderman's men, and a cavalryman at the same time. It was the largest procession ever formed here. Corpl. Hedly was an excellent young man. Capts. Williams & Valentine were here to day from Columbus under a flag of truce to procure the family of Gen. Johnson. They were permitted to take them to Columbus.

18 November 1861

Monday, 18th Pleasant. Nothing of importance occurred to day. I had the pleasure of meeting with a man by the name of Webb to day. Corpl. Hedly died this eve. Tried to send him home but could not.

17 November 1861


November, Sunday, 17th 1861 Pleasant. E.I.R.B. II Cron. 36 1st Thesol. 4-5 and also the whole book of II Thesalonians. This morning I felt as though I would like to attend church but had no opportunity to do so. Have not heard but three sermons since the 1st of Sept. This afternoon in co. with Lieut. Williford we visited the Hospitals, found Corpl. Hedly at the general hospital very low with Typhoid fever. At 4 P.M. we had dress parade and then paraded through the city. Some time in the eve the 40 & 41 regts. came in having been to Lutesville, taken 3000 bushels of wheat, several hogs and several prisoners.

16 November 1861



Saturday, 16th Pleasant. This morning I went to Gen. Paine's head qrts. to have him sign my pay rolls which he did. I then engaged in writing letters. In the after part of the day we had battalion drill and a very good one. In the eve late the 40th regt. and the cavalry went out on a scouting expedition. The naval exploits confirmed.

15 November 1861

Friday, 15th Pleasant. To day I finished making my pay rolls. Received news of Gen. Nelson's victory at Pikeville, Ky., also the taking of Forts Walker and Beaufort by the naval expedition at Port Royal entrance, S.C.

The sale of spirituous liquors in any quantity was heretofore prohibited for a wise purpose. It is understood this prohibition is evaded by selling beer and similar drinks, fortified by alcoholic preparations of some kind.  This must not be.  For the future therefore the sale of beer, or any similar drinks, in any quantity is absolutely prohibited.  The Provost Marshall will rigidly enforce this order, seizing and destroying Liquor of every description found on the premises of any one violating it, shut up the house, and expel the party from the post.  Licenses granted by the City Council to sell any description of Liquor, Beer, &c. will not be respected.

The Sutlers to the Troops stationed at this Post are hereby notified that after this date all Bills, Orders or Invoices having in view the shipment of goods of any descriptions to this post must first have the approval of the Comdg. Genl. Otherwise the Custom Officers will not permit them to enter.

Thursday, 14th Pleasant. This morning I am detailed for officer of the day. Every thing is quiet. Nothing but drilling going on. In the eve heavy rains. I made the grand rounds at 1 A.M. then went to bed.

13 November 1861

Wednesday, 13th Pleasant. E.I.R.B. II Cron. 35 Thesal. 1-2-3. To day all was quiet. Capt. Baxter from New York was here. We had battalion drill for his benefit. I am still at work on my pay rolls. To day I appointed Francis Wagner & James P. Hughes to be corpls. At supper to night we had oysters. The Col. & Maj. were present.

Condg Officer, 9th Regt Ills. Vols. - Sir : The genl Comdg desires to be informed what Military Instruction is carried on systematically in your Regiment.  How many hours per day are directed to Miltary Instruction - such as Company Drill, Battalion Drill, and what kind of Instructions.  You will please report immediately at these headquarters.

I.  When the troops desire it Commanding Officers may make requisitions upon the Subsistence Department for Tillden's Pure Extract of Coffee in lieu of sugar and coffee rations.  It will be issued at the rate of one gallon of the extract to the one hundred rations.
