15 November 1861

Friday, 15th Pleasant. To day I finished making my pay rolls. Received news of Gen. Nelson's victory at Pikeville, Ky., also the taking of Forts Walker and Beaufort by the naval expedition at Port Royal entrance, S.C.

[orders and circulars Loren would, or should, have seen concurrent with his diary entries...]

General Order No 33, Head Quarters US Forces, Paducah, Kentucky, Nov 15th, 1861
The sale of spirituous liquors in any quantity was heretofore prohibited for a wise purpose. It is understood this prohibition is evaded by selling beer and similar drinks, fortified by alcoholic preparations of some kind.  This must not be.  For the future therefore the sale of beer, or any similar drinks, in any quantity is absolutely prohibited.  The Provost Marshall will rigidly enforce this order, seizing and destroying Liquor of every description found on the premises of any one violating it, shut up the house, and expel the party from the post.  Licenses granted by the City Council to sell any description of Liquor, Beer, &c. will not be respected.
By order of Brig Genl C. F. Smith
