6 September 1861

Friday, 6th Pleasant. This morning we were still on the river. We landed at Paducah at 10 A.M. Went out to the depot. Rested till we had eaten dinner, then we marched out 6 miles and burned a railroad bridge, then returned. Got here at sundown. Great fear seized the people and they began to leave the place by scores. I lost one man from my co. He was caught by the rebels and beat nearly to death.
