27 July 1861

Saturday, 27th Pleasant. This morning they commenced paying the soldiers of the 9th reg. Received my pay amounting to $370.40. We organized a new company and I was elected Capt., W. Britt 1st Lieut., G. W. Williford, 2d Lieut. A great many of the boys went home to day. A rumor was made of an attack but none came. The artillery at Cape Gerideou fired into the boat of returning troops. Killed & wounded 15, all a mistake.

  1. Recall, back on 20 April 1861, William Britt was elected as a Sergeant in Company F in the 90-day service. The 36 year old Yorkshireman was known as "the jolliest serjeant (sic) that ever accompanied a squad". Britt's young wife Agnes accompanied him everywhere. They ran a small hotel in Mascoutah before the war and were well known to Loren in private life. Dr. George W. Williford was born 6 August 1836 in Montgomery County, Illinois, and was a physician & surgeon before the war. His father was a veteran of the Black Hawk War. He was unmarried and sported a wicked mustache.
