10 August 1861

Saturday, 10th Pleasant. Left Chicago at 6:50, arrived at Cairo at 12 in the night. Learned of the accidental death of J. Niece.

  1. Niece was born in 1839/40 in Oconee, Illinois (or in Sangamon County), and enlisted 26 July 1861 from Oconee, Illinois where he was employed as a distiller. He died of an accidental gunshot wound 10 August 1861 at Cairo, Illinois.

    From Co F, 9th Illinois descriptive list : Age 22, 5' 6" tall, dark complex, black eyes, dark hair, born Kane, Sangamon County, Illinois, occupation distiller, enlisted; enlisted 23 April 1861; mustered in 25 April 1861; mustered out 26 July 1861; reenlisted.

    From a descriptive list of casualties : James Niece, Corporal, age 22, Single, killed 10 August 1861 at Cairo, Illinois by accidental gunshot wound to the head; last paid $100.00, residence Jamestown, Sangamon County, Illinois.
