5 December 1861

Thursday, 5th Pleasant. E.I.R.B. 1st Peter 3-4-5. This morning we had battalion drill and passed in review before the Hon. Jessie K. Dubois, Aud. of Ills. In the eve took a lesson in-the sword exercise. At dress parade the order for Sergt. F. C. Scheel to report himself for the duties of a Lieut. was read. He gave the non com., and the comd., an oyster supper. Very nice. Bought a paper to night with the president's message in it.

[orders and circulars Loren would, or should, have seen concurrent with his diary entries...]
